The printed edition, published by the Library Council of The Museum of Modern Art, presents a selection of artworks responding to the idea of travel and to Aria\u2019s novel <i lang=\"es\">Un episodio en la vida del pintor viajero<\/i> (2000), both the original Spanish edition and the English translation, <i>An Episode in the Life of a Landscape Painter<\/i> (2006). The novel concerns the surreal story of an 1837 journey through South America by the German painter Johann Moritz Rugendas, an associate of the explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. Designed to fit in a special <i>valise<\/i> (a carrying case), the works include original prints, maps, artist\u2019s books, airmail envelopes, origami toys, posters, a sound recording, and a hand blown glass sculpture, all reflecting the artists\u2019 shared affinity for geography, travel literature, and book-making. \u2014 The Valise was edited and produced for The Museum of Modern Art\u2019s Library Concil by May Castleberry, Editor, Contemporary Editions, the Library Council. Leslie Miller, at The Grenfell Press, New York, and Mark Tomlinson, in Easthampton, Massachusetts, contributed to all aspects od the design and production. Jo\u00e3o S\u00e1nchez printed the 180 woodblock monoprints by Maria Laet at Est\u00eddio Baren, Rio de Janeiro.
